I start off with my famous Jack Benny bit. Mare talks more about politics and the job of government. Then we discuss the introduction of the sperm and egg. Egg, sperm. Sperm, egg. Gay statutory rape? We threaten to get rid of netflix (10 years later it hasn’t happened). Run, Lola, Run. We finish with two famous stories. One about Mare teaching WWII to ignorant old men. The other, the epic story of boy vs. tooth.
This week (10 years ago) we reveal the dark side of Sunshine. The shine has worn off a bit. Also there some political discussion where I’m not sure we know what we’re talking about. And we talk about the movie Capturing the Friedmans. The highlight of the show is clearly the visit with Will at the end of the show.
Mostly we talk about our new dog Sunshine (rest in peace). There are also brief discussion of A History of Violence, A Man Called Horse, and the news.
Our kids, the neighborhood vandals. Student Podcasts. The movie Comedian. The t.v. shows The Office and My Name is Earl. Matt joins Hapkido. Mare stresses out.
It’s funny to think back to when we watch television shows at the time and dates when they were broadcast by the networks. We only do that now if it’s a Chief’s game or there is a tornado warning.
If you’re having trouble sleeping, this is the podcast for you! We were pretty low energy on this one. So low energy that I couldn’t bother to edit the thing. At the end there is a minute of us mumbling about whether or not we’d covered the week’s worth of events. We talk about homecoming, Sunday school, school, and the media. In the past 10 years–school technology is still an issue, The Office was able to maintain their quality for several years, My Name is Earl did not, and Mare still hasn’t watched an episode of South Park. Listen if you dare.
Plainview #22 is a media blitz. Media covered in this show: Podcasts — our own; Television — My Name is Earl & The Office (both new shows at the time); Movies — Team America & What the Bleep do we Know; Books — Harry Potter, The Watchmen & The Gangster We’re All Looking For; News — why can’t they get things right about hurricane Katrina? We also talk about our kids and the weird things about them including Will’s concern about meeting Johnny Appleseed and Maly trying to decide whose side she’s on–God’s or Mom’s.
In episode 21 of The Plainview, we reviewed Kung Fu Hustle, discussed the government as Christ figure, wondered about our mean children, and talked a lot about questioning god. For what it’s worth, we still quiz our kids in the Benedictine style just about every night.
Hmmm, I wonder whatever happened to those coffee mugs?
On Plainview #20 we talk about Will’s birthday and superman, estate tax & FEMA, too much news, my 20th class reunion, movie reviews and Christ in the movies.
Remember when we had to wait a few days for our next Netflix movie?
Our libertarian rant makes me wonder if I have I become less libertarian in the last 10 years, or if my libertarian focus shifted to all the handouts the rich get from our government, maybe as the right has shifted more to the right.
The Ramones recorded the classic cover of the Spiderman theme. Here is dreamier version that Will and I put together a decade ago.
In episode #19 we respond to listener mail. We remember when we used to get our movies at the grocery store. We talk about a couple movies, American Splendor and Superman. Mare predicts that her first group of 6th graders will be one of her best. (They have since graduated from high school, and her prediction holds true.) We wonder about the pledge. And the boy impresses us with his hapkido yells.
